How To Build a Chicken Coop
Often when people buy chickens they let them live outside finding whatever shelter they can themselves. If you raise chickens in that manner you will run in to two problems. The first problem is all the predators that are out there that will hunt your chickens. Everything from stray dogs, skunks and other animals that can wipe out a whole flock of chickens.
Watch the video to the left and you will find some great information on How To Build A Chicken Coop.
It will also show you some great reviews.
I highly recommend it!
The other problem is that when they are raised that way they don't lay eggs all that well and when they do lay eggs it is hard to find them. I want to talk about two different ways when if comes to how to build a chicken coop. The easiest is to convert an older camp trailer or a shed.
If you use a camp trailer you will notice that it works well because you will only need to do very little modification. What you need to do is to take off the cabinet doors and to remove the table.
There are plenty of areas that they can roost all ready and as cabinet areas are good as laying boxes, just put some straw in the cabinets and they will make their own laying areas.
After you made this conversion it will be easy to build a covered chicken run off the front of the trailer, just remember to block off the underside of the trailer, that will help you from having all the chickens escape underneath. Just remember this: be sure you don’t intend to use the camp trailer for anything else if you convert it into a chicken coop . You can usually find old camp trailers for between $200.00-$300.00 if you are willing to pull them away yourself, you can even get them free sometimes.
Think About Predators In Your Area
We often try to rack our heads to come up with ideas for the perfect plan when building a chicken coop - or any other building project for that matter.
Some people are good at planning and like these kind of projects and that is great! If not maybe my second idea will appeal to you.
Instead of trying to come up with elaborate plans for building your chicken coop you can take advantage of your local hardware store. They usually have plans for small or large wood sheds all depending on how many chickens you are planning on keeping.

Remember that you have to build that you have to build a roost and laying boxes. A roost can easily be made out of three or four 2x2x8’s and two 2x4x8’s.
Nail your 2x4’s about 7 feet apart at about a 45 degree angle, space the 2x2’s crossways, now you have a roost. Your egg boxes can be made out of 2x2’s and ¼“ plywood. Put dividers in them since chickens like a certain amount of privacy when they lay eggs.

Remember To Build A Chicken Run
Be sure you build a chicken yard off of the coop no matter which idea you pick. Another good idea
considering all the flying predators like hawks and crows is to put chicken wire over the top of the chicken yard.
If you take good care of your chickens and they feel good they will lay a lot of eggs for you for a along time.
By the way...
I ended up downloading "Building a Chicken Coop" manual. It comes with detailed step by step instructions and is easy to follow and understand. It took me just one day to build my own chicken coop! And I took several breaks :-)
Building your own chicken coop is easier than you might think! All you need is the RIGHT blueprint.
